5 Hidden Hormone Disruptors in Everyday Products
Mar 06, 2026By Michelle Pfile | Hormone Health Educator & Advocate for Endocrine-Safe Wellness in Canada
Most women today are becoming more mindful about their health.
They’re paying attention to nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits that support longevity.
But there’s one factor that often gets overlooked: everyday chemical exposure.
Many products used daily in our homes and on our bodies contain ingredients that can interfere with hormone function.
These substances are often referred to as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
What are endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s natural hormones.
Even small exposures over time may influence:
• reproductive hormones
• thyroid function
• metabolism
• inflammation
These chemicals can be found in many common household and personal care products.
1. Synthetic fragrance
The word “fragrance” on an ingredient label can represent dozens of undisclosed chemicals.
Many fragrance ingredients have been associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions.
2. Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used in many personal care products.
They can mimic estrogen in the body and have been studied for their potential effects on hormone signaling.
3. Phthalates
Phthalates are commonly used in fragrances and plastics.
They are known endocrine disruptors and are widely studied for their effects on reproductive hormones.
4. Heavy metals in supplements
Many people are surprised to learn that supplements can legally contain certain levels of heavy metals.
Quality testing and sourcing are extremely important when choosing supplements.
5. BPA and plastic chemicals
Chemicals used in plastics can leach into food and beverages, especially when containers are heated.
These substances can interact with estrogen receptors in the body.
Small changes add up
The goal isn’t fear or perfection.
It’s awareness.
When women begin learning about what they’re putting in, on, and around their bodies, they can make more informed choices that support their long-term health.

Choosing safer products
Learning about endocrine-disrupting chemicals can feel overwhelming at first.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s simply becoming more aware of what we’re using every day and making better choices when we can. This is one of the reasons I’m passionate about advocating for products created without endocrine-disrupting ingredients and with higher safety standards.
