Why Your Skin Changes After 45 (And It's Not Just "Getting Older")

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought..."What happened to my skin?"

Maybe it's become drier than it used to be. Maybe you're suddenly dealing with sensitivity. Or maybe, just to keep life interesting, you're getting wrinkles and breakouts at the same time.

If that sounds familiar, you're not imagining it. One of the biggest things I've learned recently is that our skin after 45 is very different from the skin we had in our 20s—and it deserves to be treated differently.

Here are a few things that completely changed how I think about skin health.

Your Skin Doesn't Renew Itself as Quickly

When we're young, our skin naturally replaces old skin cells about every 28 days. As we get older, that process slows down. That means dead skin cells can hang around longer, making skin look dull, rough and uneven. It also means our skin doesn't recover quite as quickly from irritation or breakouts. Suddenly, those changes many of us notice in our 40s and 50s make a lot more sense.

Adult Acne Isn't Teenage Acne

One thing that surprised me? Acne after 45 is often completely different from the acne we experienced as teenagers. Hormonal changes, slower skin renewal, inflammation and a weakened skin barrier can all play a role. That's why using the same products you relied on at 17 often doesn't work anymore.

Our skin has changed. Our routine should change too.

Your Skin Barrier Matters More Than Ever

For years, many of us believed that if our skin looked dull or broke out, we simply needed to exfoliate more. Now we're learning something different. Over-exfoliating can actually weaken the skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier helps your skin hold onto moisture, protects against irritation and keeps your complexion looking calm and healthy.

Sometimes healthy skin isn't about doing more. It's about protecting what your skin already has.

Sunscreen Isn't Just About Preventing Sunburn

I used to think SPF was the most important number on the bottle. Now I know protecting your skin goes far beyond avoiding a burn. Daily sun protection helps defend collagen and elastin—the proteins that help keep skin looking firm and resilient.

Since collagen production naturally declines as we age, protecting what we have becomes even more important. It's one of the simplest habits we can build for long-term skin health.

Healthy Skin Starts Inside Your Body

This may have been my biggest takeaway.

Your skin isn't separate from the rest of your body.

Hydration matters.
Nutrition matters.
Inflammation matters.
Stress matters.
Sleep matters.
Hormones matter.

Your skin reflects what's happening inside your body every single day. That's why I've stopped thinking about skincare as simply what I put on my face. Instead, I've started thinking about how I support my skin from both the inside and the outside.

The Routine I've Been Loving This Summer

After learning all of this, I realized my own routine already follows this inside-out philosophy.

πŸ’§ Hydrate + Detox

Healthy skin begins with proper hydration.

I love starting my day with Hydrate + Detox because it provides electrolytes to support hydration along with glutathione, an antioxidant, and a probiotic to support overall wellness. While it's not a skincare product, healthy hydration and overall wellness create a better environment for your skin to thrive.

✨ Aura Mist

One of my favourite discoveries has been Aura Mist.

Instead of stripping my skin or making it feel tight, it helps replenish hydration and supports my skin barrier throughout the day. I keep it in my purse, by my desk and in the fridge during the summer for an instant refresh.

β˜€οΈ Sunscreen with Benefits

Daily sunscreen has become non-negotiable.

Not because I'm trying to avoid a tan...but because I'm trying to protect my skin for the next 20 years. I love using a mineral sunscreen that not only provides broad-spectrum protection but also contains ingredients that nourish my skin while I wear it.

The Bottom Line

The older I get, the less interested I am in chasing perfect skin. I'm far more interested in supporting healthy skin. I've learned that beautiful skin isn't built by finding one miracle cream. It's built through small, consistent habits.

Hydrating well.
Protecting your skin.
Supporting your body.
Getting enough sleep.
Managing stress.
Choosing products that work with your skin instead of against it.

Because healthy skin isn't just about looking younger. It's about giving your body what it needs to function well—inside and out.
